GROUP THERAPY

WHAT IS GROUP THERAPY?

Group therapy is when a group of you meet to describe and discuss your struggles and circumstances under the moderation and instruction of a trained therapist. We have several different groups, making it so you can meet people with similar experiences. Usually there are five to 15 people in a group, with one or two therapists there as moderators. Prior assessment is required before attending any group therapy session. Call to inquire about our group therapy schedules.

THE BENEFITS OF GROUP THERAPY

While joining a group of strangers sounds intimidating at first, group therapy provides certain benefits that individual therapy does not bring. Group members can act as a support network and a sounding board in a safe, confidential, and respectful environment. In this setting you can learn to express your experiences, develop self-awareness by listening to others’ issues, find new perspectives for your life’s challenges, get feedback on your thoughts and efforts, and come away with new ideas of how to tackle problems you face. Talking and listening to others also helps put your own problems in perspective.

Many people experience mental health struggles, but most only talk openly about it with people they know well. This makes it easy to feel alone and isolated as you struggle through something. Group therapy can reverse these feelings so they don’t result in depression or worsened behavioral issues. With a group, you gain support and strength from interacting, discussing and problem-solving with others that are going through something similar.

Not only do you get the benefits of support, but with trained therapists you get professional help to overcome cognitive, physical, emotional, and social struggles. Depending on the goals for the group, you may role-play alternative responses to situations, you may practice a variety of social skills, or you may be challenged or held accountable to change something specific each week.
